Popular Anti-virus Programs
Usually new computers come with either McAfee or Norton.  Links for both are provided below but both are very memory intensive and I wouldn't put them on my machines.  Both will often find problems but are usually unable to remove the issue.  They require a subscription.
Unfortunately for Norton and McAfee, there are better products available for free. Others have recommended to me Avast.  It is highly rated by CNET. If you want to try it the link is below.
By Popular Demand - Microsoft Extras (which probably shouldn't have been extras to begin with)
Those who have upgraded to Microsoft Office 2007 may have noticed that earlier versions of Office have trouble opening the new file extensions. This is a quick fix which can be easily implemented by downloading and installing this patch from Microsoft.

Others may have tried or wanted to save their Word document as PDF. This functionality is free and can be added with Microsoft's "Save as PDF" Add-in, downloaded HERE.

I hope these help!
Free Software
There are also plenty of sites like SnapFiles & SourceForge & techsoup.org where you can find low to no cost software.
